This week, almost 12 months from the week I wrote this about the disgusting abuse of people with learning disabilities at the Castlebeck Winterbourne View private hospital near Bristol, we saw the publication of the Serious Case Review. 11 people have already been charged in respect of this abuse and they will be sentenced next month.
Nowhere in the Review will you find the word 'sorry', despite the abject failure of commissioners and regulators to ensure the safety and care of those they are paid to protect. All of the media reports carried Castlebeck's mealey-mouthed, smug and arrogant response, which did at least contain belated words of apology.
But…. Castlebeck are still making money out of 'caring' for the vulnerable; no one senior in the company goes to jail, no one is barred from public office, no directors are disqualified.
Why am I not surprised?
