One particular thing stood out for me during Cameron’s statement to the House of Commons today was how thoroughly pained Nick Clegg looked throughout the proceedings.
Gone was the grinning ‘nodding dog’ who used to lap up every Cameron wisecrack. No, as his leader stumbled his way through his valedictory, trying desperately to appear apologetic without actually saying sorry, his Deputy most certainly looked like he wanted to give the impression that the whole proceedings were ‘nothin’ to do with me, guv’.
Of course, it may be that he has decided that if the Lib Dems keep their heads down and their leader keeps his mouth firmly shut, the electorate may forget they were ever there. It is notable that although the whole News International/police/politician scandal has not reflected well on the two main partners, the Lib Dems have snuck up a couple of points in the opinion polls.
Alternatively, of course, Clegg may know more than he is letting on, and is anxious not to be associated with any of the fallout that may follow if this whole mess ends up on the front doorstep of No.10 Downing Street.

I thought he was not looking very comfortable. There was lots of face scratching and mind wandering all over the place. I did think that maybe he is a special needs case?
Well Bob so he should and I wonder why we are being tame on him.
Cameron today was told he had been told about the stuff about Coulson by clegg. Cameron never refuted this, even though he said at PMQ’s he had received no such information.
Remeber that PMQ’s with the shocked Ed M and Clegg looking thunder struck ?
Basically Cameron lied, you know it, the party knows it and even clegg, but he will not pull the trigger on Cameron
such an obvious thing really to point out to Cameron but we did not, no backbencer did and I ask myself why ?
I hold absolutely no brief for Cameron but I have to admit, through clenched teeth, that his ‘performance’ yesterday was masterful and was reflected in the running poll on Sky News which asked if Cameron had been damaged by this “tempest in a teacup”? To begin with nearly 60% agreed that he had but by the end he had a positive response of 53%.
The man who failed miserably yesterday was ‘Milibrain’. He must have known that no smoking gun had yet been discovered and instead of launching himself and his troops in endlessly futile assaults against Cameron at his smoothest, he should have taken the moral high ground by offering bipartisan support for the enquiries to come, hands across the gangway and all that! He could still have inserted the occasioanl piece of spite but he would have come across as statesman-like (do stop giggling!) and the thickoes behind him would not have come across as utterly useless and tedious as they asked the same questions over and over again. Even that prat Watson couldn’t get his own facts right, claiming that the PM had failed to answer a letter of his – and today No. 10 published the letter they had sent!
Your lot yesterday looked and sounded even more pathetic than normal which made the Tories, God help us, appear almost business-like and sensible! And Cameron’s ruthless attack on Balls was superb. None of the parties have any credit on this issue and the more your lot attack the Tories the more they will keep reminding us who was in government for 13 years whilst the media dogs were shitting on the carpet!
You’ve just got to love Duffy, haven’t you? He watches Murdoch’s TV station and then, with no sense of irony, reports that their ‘opinion poll’ revealed that their man was the most popular. I’m not entirely sure, old boy, whether you are gullible or just plain stupid, but I’m tending towards the latter because surely no-one could be that gullible? “Cameron’s ruthless attack…”… wonderful! What was it Denis said about being ‘savaged by a dead sheep’?
Difficulty reading, Councillor? “To begin with nearly 60% agreed that he had [been harmed by the scandal]“.
And if you think Balls wasn’t hurt by Cameron’s dagger thrust it might be that your reading difficulties are due to your poor eyesight!
Sorry, my mistake. You are obviously both gullible and stupid. An ‘opinion poll’ faked in the Sky newsroom to convince tits like you that Cameron was harmed but isn’t any more, and tits like you believe it. You’ll be telling me that you don’t think Coulson, the Murdochs and Brooks knew anything about phone hacking next… oh, no, you’ve already said that haven’t you, it’s all just a left wing plot.
By the way… weren’t you the one with eyesight problems?
Anyway, my survey is bigger than your survey if you want to play playground games: http://politicalscrapbook.net/2011/07/cameron-slumps-to-four-year-low-as-miliband-seizes-initiative-on-hacking/
He may have got through it alright, but did you know that he used the same verbal evasion coach that the Murdochs used? Hence the similarity in their responses. Clever, huh?
The other clever thing he did was avoid having to tell how many times he met NI execs BEFORE the election!
