Sticks and stones…

Can I put in a plea to delegates to the Labour Party Conference. Stop this silly ConDem nonsense! Put the blame for what this Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition squarely where it belongs, on the Conservative Party and their willing allies, the Liberal Democrats.

For years we have had to put up with the childish name calling of the right and the ultra left. Bliar, Broon, NuLiebore… tell me, comrades, did that impress you, or turn you straight off whichever juvenile muppet is using it? So don’t sink to that level. It not only trivialises the arguments you are using, it also distracts attention from the two political parties responsible for what is happening.

That’s odd! No mention of the party who were in government for the past 13 years and who are responsible for the state we’re in today which the new government has to try and sort out. Gosh, Councillor, you’re awfully good at that Nelson/telescope stuff!

Do the words ‘Labour’ and ‘Party’ constitute “no mention”, Duffers? You’re losing it old fellah.

On the actual point (as opposed to the Duffers sideswipe), I totally agree. This is a Tory government. There are some Liberal Democrats in it, and they have some limited influence. And that is how it should be presented.

‘ConDem’ is childish. It’s puerile. It’s not as stupid as ‘ZANULiebore’ but that took a few years of a crowd of idiots egging each other on over the internets to come up with. Let’s not lower ourselves to the level of the brayers, huh?

Although it’s bandied about on the internet a lot, I feel a bit surprised that it’s been used on the platform at the Conference – however you have to admit that it’s uncannily appropriate for the Con/LibDem government. It’s their name, there’s no spelling alteration, it’s only minus the ‘Liberal’ bit – which is apposite in itself. If you’re making a speech it must be tempting to build a catchy sentence around ‘condemn’ and ‘ConDem’.

‘ZANULiebore’ was a jibe that likened Labour to Mugabe’s regime – a pretty stupid claim in anyone’s book, even if all they meant was that Labour had a habit of winning elections. As for the ‘lie’ bit, that’s highly contentious, not to say slanderous. What I’ve found puzzling is why ‘NuLab’ appeared to be regarded as a clever put-down. Why ‘nu’? Is it inspired by Gary Numan? Strangely enough, if I remember correctly, back in the day Gary Numan made some pro-Tory comments. It may have been no coincidence that Gary’s career went into the doldrums shortly afterwards. Kids back then really didn’t like their pop stars to be Tories!
