Margaret Thatcher’s friend Asil Nadir returns to Britain after 17 years exile…
He said he hoped the new Government would be ‘wise enough and will think highly enough of Great Britain’ to clear the matter.
and…
Nadir, who donated about £500,000 to the Conservative party, said he would not rule out financially supporting the Coalition Government.

His totally-out-of-the-blue return happens after most of the investigating officers have retired, when there’s little enthusiasm for reopening the case – and shortly after Cameron returns from a visit to Turkey where he bent over all ways to get on the good side of the Turkish government.
Hmmm.

Why do you bother with these smears? There is not a political party in the country that hasn’t accepted dodgy money from dodgy sources. Do you really want someone to start trawling through recent history to list all of Labour’s? Honestly, I suspect I speak for many of your readers in preferring one of your long drones on the subject of Villa or Yorkshire Cricket Club!
Well £1000 a night dinner with a minister, how many thousand to turn a blind eye to what is after all somebody who ran away from the law, but I suspect he will be seen as an asset to the UK, while we fly out some poor sod who came here to make a life.
Rather than face justice in a court of law Asil Nadir fled the country like a thief in the night.
He should have been arrested as soon as he stepped onto the tarmac.
It is disgraceful that a judge allowed himself to be blackmailed into granting bail. It is a matter of public record that he is a fugitive from justice. Normally, bail would not be granted to those who the authorities believe would flee justice. Surrendering his British passport and being fitted with an electronic tag, will not stop another jet leaving from a private airstrip when the going gets tough.
The whole purpose of Category A is to prevent a prisoner with the means to effect an escape from escaping. Why isn’t Asil Nadir in the security wing at Belmarsh Prison?
Already he has corrupted a judge, now he is attempting to bribe the coalition to interfere with justice on the promise of a substantial donation.
Is the message going out here “Come home all is forgiven”? Are the Tories so hard up for cash? How long before Lord Fugitive from Justice takes up his seat in the House of Lords?
Smears, Duffers? The report that Cllr Piper refers us to is reporting Asil Nadir’s statements. Blame him if they suggest some kind of backroom deals with the new Government.
I find it bizarre that someone in Nadir’s position was not remanded.
It took guts to come back, innocent until proven guilty.
Yeah… Like it took guts to run away in the first place.
mike:
> It took guts to come back, innocent until proven guilty.
Surely it would have taken more ‘guts’ to face the original trial? And if he’d been acquitted, the last 17 years would probably have been great for him.
My guess is that he’s only coming back because he thinks he’s going to get a soft deal. I do hope that his statements don’t mean that the current government led him to think that would be the case, because either way it’s a bit dodgy:
a) they have arranged for him to get a nice let-off and a wrist-slap which will be portrayed as innocence
b) they’ve tricked him into coming back to have the book thrown at him
The second would make me laugh, but it does smack of deceit, surely?
What a laugh, he had to hand in his passport on arrival!
That was’nt a problem last time.
