John Prescott gets it right

John Prescott has been criticised for not taking the Chilcot Inquiry seriously, and justifiably so given the number of casualties as a consequence of the invasion. As Deputy Prime Minister if Prescott was uneasy about the standard of intelligence offered to support the case for war, he was in a very influential position. Blair just about survived Robin Cook’s resignation, and I doubt very much indeed he would have been able to push ahead if his deputy PM had resigned.
But, yesterday, John Prescott got it right. The Sunday Times critic AA Gill wrote some highly offensive homophobic remarks about TV presenter Clare Balding. Prescott tweeted:

Where will it all end Bob , with laws that enforce the sort of rigorous standards of courtesy you habitually ignore ?

Lack of courtesy. Moi? I’m hurt.

From what I’ve read about this, I think Ms Balding was more offended by the letter she got from Sunday Times editor John Witherow, saying she should get over herself – basically a ‘it’s political correctness gone maaaad’ line and that she should just laugh if someone calls a name, which – whatever way you look at it – is usually meant as an insult (she’s had people shout ‘dyke’ at her before). He also rather bizarrely said it was no worse than Jeremy Clarkson being criticised for his dress sense.
AA Gill has got form as far as insulting people goes – he’s also insulted the entire Welsh nation and, to be even-handed, the entire English nation (‘the great beefy-bummed herd’ was his phrase). He’s a bit of a law unto himself. It’s Witherow’s defence which is more insulting.
