Just how ‘localisist’ is that!

David Cameron, Blair-lite as ever, has been very open in his support for directly elected Mayors. But Cameron knows that Blair’s attempts to get Mayor’s through referendums often resulted in people saying ‘no, we don’t want one thank you’. And in Stoke-on-Trent the hopeless elected Mayor system proved so popular that people voted to scrap it.
But this article in The Birmingham Post seems to imply that the lard-arsed Pickles has found a way round the democratic will of the people. It implies that the rotund Westminster politician is going to have a vote in the 12 major cities to elect a Mayor… and then ask people if they actually want one or not!!!
Very bloody localist!

  1. Gary Elsby says:

A year and a half to get 5000 signatures for a Mayor(or two).
14 hours to get 10,000 signatures calling for a referendum to get rid.
Oh, how Labour’s NEC did not like that.
Fact is that Cameron and Clegg are commited to enabling Enhanced Committees in place of the dreadful Leader/Cabinet system.
In fact, this is such a good runner, that the new Party launched this week in Stoke (most expelled by Reilly/NEC) installed this as its prime agenda aim.
