…and hunting with the hounds.
The Tories (and their press pack, and obsequious followers) are today saying too many people in this country are in prison. And they are right. One of the main issues is that a lot of the people that languish in our prisons should be receiving treatment and care for mental health conditions, and it is one of the things Labour has a less than proud record of dealing with.
Of course, the Tories would be in a lot stronger position to criticise if they had actually opposed the prison building expansion programme instead of enthusiastically supporting it.
And, as Dooley Wilson might say, you must remember this…

- For a fundamental and irreversible shift in the balance of power and wealth in favour of working people and their families...

I hope you won’t accuse me of party hackery, but there is a difference between letting people out early, and not putting people away in the short term.
I’m not going to deny that this is a Tory U-turn, probably at the behest of the Liberal left-flank protection, but it is a welcome one none the less.
Oh, I agree, most welcome… as was the release of those who shouldn’t have been in prison in the first place. But I hope you won’t accuse me of party hackery (as if) for pointing out that the Tories tried to make political capital out of it before the election.
Are you suggesting politicians TELL FIBS to get elected? I’m shocked, Councillor.
It’s outrageous hypocrisy. Vilify the previous government’s actions and then do exactly the same.
The media did compare it with what Michael Howard said about 15 years ago (‘prison works’ – a very simplistic claim), which is a long time ago now, but nowhere (that I saw) did it make the more apposite comparison with this poster from the election campaign. I remember seeing it plastered up with others in a nearby town, a marginal seat which fell to the Tories.
The Tories have a long history of playing dirty like this – and it demeans all politicians.
Jackart… Never done it myself, but I suppose some of us do it based on integrity, charm, wit and being an all round good egg.
