Tory commentators are fond of telling people that the BNP vote comes from disaffected Labour supporters.
I wonder what they will make of the Tory and UKIP share of the vote in the Tory stronghold of Huntingdonshire District Council yesterday.

Well Bob, I just heard that the Pope is definitely a Catholic; that genus ursus americanus will usually relieve itself in the woods; and that the Kennedys are afraid of open-topped cars, rifles, light aircraft and low bridges over shallow water.
Everybody knows UKIP is a Tory splinter and that there’s a yo-yo vote between the two. How come it took you so long to find out? Where have you been old hoss?
I’ll happily take UKIP as the Tory fringe-whinge over the BNP as labour’s any and every day of the week. and by the way, the Labour bod came last. after UKIP. Ooops!
The interesting point, which clearly sailed right over your head (but why am I not surprised), was the extent to which they split the Tory vote. Any guesses on the Tories finishing position in Glasgow North East then Jules? Being as you’re such a friggin’ smart arse.
Hey, feisty! I love the fact that that while the good ship Labour continues to suffer its own personal Stalingrad – in every way, shape and form on domestic turf and internationally – the best you can do is ignore it as you struggle Harriet Harpersonfully to poke the Tories in the eye. To be honest, I think you’d be engaging company over dinner. It certainly wouldn’t be dull.
The general election is always the Big One. The measure of UKIP’s impact will only truly be felt then. However, you must balance out the fact that many people who gravitate to UKIP in smaller elections will likely take a different view in favour of the Tories come May 6. That’s because getting rid of a bankrupt, rotten and congenitally incompetent Labour government is an overriding priority that’s spreading; even if it means holding their noses and grinding their teeth about Lisbon.
That having been said, I’m glad UKIP is prospering. It shows that not every last ohm and erg of spirit has been ground out of the political and social landscape of post-war Britain. And they are also acting as a necessary spur for keeping the Tories on their EU toes.
So. Have a super weekend in the ideological bunker!
I’m glad they are prospering too. I am a eurosceptic… and they take Tory votes. I win twice!
I hope yours is good too, Julian.
