So, David Davis (for freedom) has emerged from his self imposed exile to once again take up the sword of liberty and portray himself as the gatekeeper of our civil liberties. His continuing bleating makes him look like a reincarnation of that fat bloke in a white suit from the BBC who used to make a living prattling on in superior moral tones to anyone with a news camera prepared to listen to him. This time David Davis (for freedom – and hanging) wants Damien Green to be charged and dragged before a court to explain himself. What a strange sentiment for a man who once wanted to be the Home Secretary. Without any knowledge beyond the vague details to have emerged in the media of the investigation the police are carrying out, David Davis (for freedom – whatever happened to that campaign?) has worked it all out.
He knows Damien is a good chap because he’s a jolly decent cove who was “one of the steadiest men I have ever had the privilege to serve with.” (Actually, I’m not sure how much of a ringing endorsement that is – wasn’t that bloke who is Dale’s mate who was fiddling all his expenses and ripping off the public purse to pay his family for doing sweet sod all, also one of the steadiest blokes you had the privilege to serve with on your leadership election campaign as well?). So, never mind the police carrying out an investigation into systematic corruption by a civil servant, the case is all wrapped up because Damien is as steady Derek Conway.
Case dismissed then, eh?

Silly fellow has little of importance to do now that he is only a shadow of his previous self. Cameron also needs to take care, that pretend hurt look he appears to be showing every bleedin’ day is getting a tad irritating.
Bob – for Damien Green, read Gordon Brown and Robin Cook when in Opposition. Same view, or isn’t it relevant because no charges were brought, for exposing (in that case Tory) Government incompetence ?
Or am I raking up history for political ends, something this Government never does … ? Except of course interest rates, unemployment levels etc etc etc
No, you’re not necessarily raking up history for political ends (and in any event i do plenty of that myself – I actually think you have to learn from history). What you are doing, is the same as David Davis (for freedom) and that is making assumptions about what was leaked, and for what purpose.
Surely even you must see the difference between a civil servant leaking something genuinely in the public interest (Tisdall, Ponting – both prosecuted by Thatcher’s stalinist police) and a civil servant, paid out of the public purse, leaking confidential information for party political motives? The latter is little different to Nixon’s watergate burglaries.
At the moment you are making an assumption about what was leaked, and why. If you are correct, that it was information which would validly be seen in the public interest, then you will be proved correct, and I have no problem with that.

Errrm, I think you already said that.
systematic corruption? Big claim. On what basis?
On the evidence of the Home Secretary who told Andrew Marr this morning that the only thing she knew about it before the raid was that she had been informed the police were investigating a civil servant in her department – on the initiation of the head of the Cabinet Office – for just that.
