You must be Joking?

If you were looking for advice on steering a course through tricky waters…. would you ask the opinion of the captain of the Titanic! Are we seriously expected to believe that the man who helped to shape the Tory wilderness years, and now spends his time pimping himself around the after-dinner circuit for up to 7,000 quid a throw, is an expert.
Whatever next…. Tony Blair advises on how to avoid wars?

  1. I started reading the article this morning and was bored after the first paragraphy. It just goes to show how desperate the media are for a ‘new angle’ on the financial crisis.

Unlike Ross and his 18 million quid, this comedian costs me nowt.

  3. Tim J says:

Be fair! If you were looking for advice in how *not* to avoid icebergs, which is after all pretty much what Lamont’s article is about – ‘don’t do what we did’ – the captain of the Titanic would be a great person to ask.
If it wasn’t for the whole drowning thing that is.

  4. Evan Price says:

By this reasoning, Gordon Brown, who lost much larger sums by selling gold at the bottom of the market and brought in a financial regulatory regime that failed at the first hurdle (admittedly a big hurdle), is also not the person to find a way out!

  5. Bob says:

Mike, sadly not true. The muppet not only pimps his failures around City lunches, you pay for his residency in the comedy club known as the House of Lords.

Don’t malaign Captain Smith. If there is a criticism it is that he let the Chairan of White Star Line (Bruce Ismay)run his ship for him, including heading into an area of ice without slowing down.
The last recorded coment of Captain Smith as the “Titanic” plunged was “I am the Captain, I must follow the ship”.
In contrast Bruce Ismay was recovered from a half full life boat.
