Tory MP arrested in child abuse scandal

Thanks to Chris Paul for tipping me off about the Tory MP for Eastbourne, Nigel Waterson who has been detained by the police over allegations of assault on his teenage children. We have no information yet as to whether or not Mr Waterson (once described as the most homophobic MP in the Commons – and that is some achievement) is the latest ‘mate’ of Iain Dale’s to have fallen foul of the authorities, but on the basis that Mr Dale’s Diary appears to be staying schtum on this latest scandal we can probably assume they are chums from way back in the day.
So far Mr David Cameron, also a close friend of Mr Waterson, doesn’t appear to have made up his mind whether he is going to support him or not… for what that is worth.

  1. Don’t you think it’s worth waiting to see if the police want to take any action against someone who is questioned about assault? It was Nigel Waterson who called the police into this situation in the first place.

  2. Bob Piper says:

What, you mean like Tory bloggers, including yourself, have waited for the police investigation or any charges to be brought against Peter Hain… or indeed, the way they never prejudged the police investigations into Lord Levy, nor Tony Blair, nor Ruth Turner… the list goes on.
God, you Tories are Soooo hypocritical it is almost unbelievable. So very good at dishing the dirt, and so poor about getting it back in bucket loads. If you can’t take it, don’t start it.

  3. Sorry Bob, but I don’t see how you can compare the Peter Hain situation to Nigel Waterson.
Thanks to Guido and several newspapers, the facts about Peter Hain had been unearthed over several months. Questions over his leadership campaign have been common knowledge for a long time now. We knew what had happened, but it just took some time for sufficient evidence to accumulate and the Electoral Commission and police to become assess the situation and ultimately become involved.
With regard to Nigel Waterson, neither you or I have any idea what happened. The facts have not been released by the police, and no-one outside of the immediate situation knows what actually took place. Assault is a criminal matter and the police have been investigating the incident (whatever it was) from the start.
The two situations could not be more different so you cannot apply the same rule to both.

  4. Bob Piper says:

Sorry, but I think you can… and I’m not just talking about Peter Hain… you seem to have conveniently skipped over the others.
Hain (Blair, Levy etc) has been questioned by the police, so has the Tory. Neither (none) have been charged with any offence.
Severity, whether it be assault or the late filing of financial records doesn’t come into it. I think you will find my report said Mr Waterson had been detained by the police. If that is not correct I will give him my unreserved apology.
All I’m saying is it ill-becomes those who judge others of wrongdoing on the basis of unsubstantiated evidence to suddenly get all precious about it.

  5. Snafu says:

    Will Cameron withdraw the whip!?!
PS Will Hain be required to give Police a DNA sample to be kept on file for posterity or does this only applier to us lesser mortals!?!

Oh I agree and if only you would stick to that Bob. You and the autistic twitching bed-sored obsessive Chris Paul can`t accept anything about the foul and corrupt misdoings of Labour until you see a written admission in triplicate.
In this case I just don’t see its a Party political matter. Recuss Monkey suggested that all Conservatives are child molesters on the basis that they fail to do enough to relieve child poverty.( On that basis we are all mass murderers of course , in one way or another…eek). I don`t think anyone suggests it who is likely to be taken seriously though.
If you want a laugh by the way have a look at some of the quotes the Guardian have unearthed from Conway on the proper use of tax payers money for educating his electors ……( oh dear…) I wish I still had the time to blog.
To be honest with you I think this whole puritanical rubbish is harmful in a number of ways . For example, noone who has any involvement with a business can be employed by the Coucil . Result , the Council never gets anything right and the same is true of the FSA .Look at what they did with N Wreck, and believe me I know of what I speak dealing with them myself. It goes to the heart if the Conservative case, The pursuit of perfection is self defeating and the failure to include the human your equations is catastrophic . Brown thinks if he can gather enough information that the state can respond to people flexibly via the internet .
Well that would work if they were ants

  7. Bob Piper says:

newmania… difficult to respond to much of that because you have slipped back into speaking in 17 Century english and I always struggle with that.
One question though: where did you get this notion that you can’t be a councillor if you have ‘involvement with a business?’ Everyone has some involvement with a business, but actually you can own several businesses at the same time and still be a councillor, so I’m not clear about the point you are making (or even what point you are making).

  8. Bob Piper says:

Not at all. The facts are as stated.
