David Cameron is ‘launching a fightback’ on tax at the Tory Party Conference. For those of you who may have slept through the last month, this should not be confused with David Cameron’s last fightback which was on crime and was launched so successfully at the end of August. That was a campaign manufactured when his two chief advisers, Andy Coulson and Steve Hilton were still speaking to each other and it was so successful that Labour more than doubled their lead in the opinion polls. Nor should it be confused with his earlier ‘fightback’ on Health which took place in August.
Unless the lad has a very lucky week indeed in Blackpool, I suspect he may well have to look behind his back to launch his next fightback.

Well its all a fightback until we get even again. Looking over the Polls I think you would see about a 5% gap across the board. Brown will have to take it so it looks a bit bleak for us.
I wonder though if in the modern state the indefatigable opposition of the non swing voter is going to be as important as the seats . Blair had the neutrality of opposition who saw the Conservatives could not lead themselves. Its easy to forget the extent of disarray
That does not apply to Brown who may be new to the apoltical swingers but is very old indeed to those who are interested and who are incandescent at the con trick of new Brown. I imagine the Major years must have felt the same .Brown will be battling the irreconcilable loathing of the South and sections of the media from day one..
The other ray of hope is that opinion Polls have been drastically wrong and my suspicion is that figures are misread as they are compared to periods when the volitility of opinion was far less than today. Things can change quickly
As I said earlier, I have little faith in the accuracy of the polls other than to provide a snapshot. For the moment they are welcome because they help to get the Tories biting lumps off each other, which is always a welcome site.
Bob, if you doubt that his fightback is working at the conference, maybe you should pick up the papers this morning and see what they think? Even the Guardian’s criticism fell completely flat. Other newspapers were showering praise on William Hague and George Osborne as well as David Cameron.
Sadly for you comrade, it will require a fightback a little further than the confines of the Winter Gardens.
