The New Statesman - Great Speeches.

My vote was for Geoffrey Howe's resignation speech. Many of the others in the NS list contained much greater oratorical power, but this one did the damage. Oh how we celebrated!

I believe that both the Chancellor and the governor are cricketing enthusiasts, so I hope that there is no monopoly of cricketing metaphors. It is rather like sending your opening batsmen to the crease only for them to find, the moment the first balls are bowled, that their bats have been broken before the game by the team captain.

I should imagine that their are a wealth of similar stories about the Great Leader.

It is our loss that none of the shameful shower of quitting front benchers have been able to put their experiences into words as eloquently as Sir Geoffrey.

A good choice, Bob, and not just for those on the Left. It was spellbinding drama unfolding before ones eyes. She was past her best and the Tories got rid of their leader as they are adept at doing. And they went on to win the next election too.
