Presumably, the screening of The Ashes on terrestrial television (with live rights on one channel and say, highlights on another) would attract substantially more viewers than an exclusive deal with SKY. There wouldn't actually be any justification for making it a crown jewel event if it didn't.
And as Mr Murdoch makes money for screening these events from advertising, surely there is a decent amount extra money to be made by the governing body of the sport in negotiating advertising deals for the events, in addition to the money they would receive from the broadcasting companies?
Well, if the 'Baghdad Broadcasting Corporation' took ads then perhaps they might cease dipping their manicured hands in my back pocket for the contributions to their expense accounts.

Perhaps the next think we should do is put all appearances of our national teams in our national sports (football, cricket and rugby if you must) onto the list. It's the right thing to do and if it upsets the Murdochs then thats a bonus. He can still have Aston Villa however;)
