God save the Queen   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

Victoria Coren in The Observer on celebrating a big win in Las Vegas:

It feels big here, especially with the new tradition of playing each winner's national anthem to a crowded room. But there is a scandal brewing over Kabbaj's ceremony: as he ascended the platform, the organisers played - quite by accident, they claim - God Save The Queen by The Sex Pistols. Eighty per cent of the watching Brits laughed, 19.5% made complaints to the management and one called the police claiming racial abuse.

Good article that. Though I suspect CP Scott would be unamused....

The Pistols' song would make a fine and always appropriate national anthem (assuming a national anthem is needed).

Most things with "national" in the title makes me bristle; national anthem, national pride, national front...they all appeal to people's worst and lowest instincts.
