Hague blackmail threat to weak Cameron   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

Following on from the earlier posting about David Cameron's u-turn on Shadow Cabinet members outside interests, we have this from Conservative Home: Hague threatened to quit if outside interests were banned (read the comments to see what the grassroots Tories think of Cameron's weakness and Vague's blackmail) and the full story at the Mail Online.

...it became apparent the move would have triggered Shadow Cabinet resignations and forced an emergency reshuffle. George Osborne

Senior Tory politicians complained that Shadow Chancellor George Osborne and Mr Cameron had wealthy backgrounds to fall back on

"William Hague made clear he was not going to stand for it. There would have been three resignations," one senior source has claimed.

Labour is exploiting the fact that 16 out of the 22 members of the Shadow Cabinet have declared remunerated employment to top up their 65,000 pounds salary as MPs.

Mr Hague earned 230,000 pounds this year from speaking fees and directorships, while policy chief Oliver Letwin works part-time for bankers N M Rothschild and International Development spokesman Andrew Mitchell holds six directorships with Lazards merchant bank.

Some frontbenchers are jealous that both Mr Cameron and Mr Osborne are from wealthy backgrounds and do not have to rely solely on their MP's salary.

One senior source told the Mail: "It's a minor issue, but it does suggest that he's not quite as confident of his position as people might have assumed six months ago."

What a shower!

I tend to agree Bob. This reflects badly on both Hague and Cameron. No one is indespensable and Cameron should have stood his ground and let Haque walk, if his heart is not in the job.

It's not as if MPs are poorly paid and Hague will be picking up a highly lucrative goverment minister's salary if the team come to power. This dose make one question how confident of winning the next election Hague is. Very disappointing, Hague has gone right down in my estimation, Dave was never up.

They may think it's a 'minor issue' but it will not play well when people are being made unemployed and being repossessed. Nor will it be forgotten come election time either.

Oh yeah, That recession. Would this be the one nicely teed up by Gordon Brown you're talking about?

Busting an economy - wow that really ranks up there with holding an outside directorship when it comes to turning off the voters.

100-150 Nulabour MPs to lose their jobs come election-time. And they will have no-one to blame but themselves.
