Dizzy implies Polly thinks 3 million unemployed is a price worth paying.

Tom implies that Andrew Landsley thinks unemployment can be great fun because you spend more time with your family.

I think 3 million unemployed is a bloody disgrace, and unlike the Thatcher Government that positively encouraged it to happen, this Labour Government must not let it happen.

I actually agree that it is wrong Bob and by no means ideal in anyway. However, the casual way with which Polly thinks it won;t be such a bad thing is bizarre. and Lansley is a cock too for saying what he did.

Andrew Lansley.
Just when Socialists needed to invent how a Tory Britain would be for our new young voters, up pops Andrew with a couple of classics from the 1980's.
Wonderful stuff this and hopefully, Brillo Pad Neil will see this as a highlight of the week.

Will Iain Dale give this story a good critic when he' up on the telly?

What needs to be made clear is that Polly Toynbee's putative 3 million 'unemployed' in late 2008 is NOT the same figure as the 3 million 'unemployed' in early 1985 (actually 3.3 million) or late 1993.

The unemployment measure intorduced by the Labour government in 1997 is the ILO measurement based on the General Household Survey (so therefore open to sampling error. This is much higher, though a more honest measure, than the claimant count measure (ie. those claiming unemployment realetd benefit), which was used by the Conservatives until 1997.

The claimant count at the moment is a little less than a million. Had the Conservatives used the ILO measure when it was in power, unemployment in the term we now use may have been up around the 8-9 million mark.

So while no-one is claiming the situation is good ,and while Labour must strive (and is striving) to keep people in work, we do need to use like-for-like correct figures for comparisons of now and then.

I've posted on this in full, with ONS sources etc at http://www.bickerstafferecord.org.uk/?p=350 if you're interested.

Before you snigger at my tag again...."Not let it happen" is a sort of King Canute statement. The Govt is virtually powerless to do anything, The debt mountain is so huge its mind boggling. 3 million out of work could be an underestimate. As for Polly, no doubt she won't feel the pain in her villa in Tuscany. Anyone for champers Polly?. The hypocrisy of suggesting that 90% of people will have secure jobs whilst 3 million are on the dole is breathtaking. Spin at its New Labour worst.

Well if you didn't make such banal statements you wouldn't get sniggered at. Of course the Government isn't 'powerless', and if it was, presumably there would be no point electing a different government anyway. The whole point is that by using public spending projects and a fiscal stimulus you can create as well as maintain employment.

The whole point about getting cash released to businesses is to allow those businesses to continue to emply people.

Carry on with your idiotic comments with your ridiculous comic book name if you wish. It is no wonder you choose not to use your own name if you are going to make such a prat of yourself.

It's probably a good time to mention Nolan's Truism.
