When it was announced that George Orwell's diary was going to be released in blog format 70 years to the day it was originally written I thought it was a really fascinating idea. But.... for weeks on end virtually all we have had have been entries saying things like... "Yesterday morning blowy and overcast, then some fairly heavy showers of rain. Today no rain, but cooler still & windy." I could have got that sort of stuff from the diaries of Michael bloody Fish!
Well, the diary for today seems to have reached a new high in excitement levels. Eric, my old son, you might have written a few good pieces in your time... but mate, your diaries are shite!
Can I share with you my diary for 1958? It has only one entry, written in a fit of New Year enthusiasm I expect: 1st Jan: "had a sausage and egg pie". The rest of the year is blank so that must have been the high-spot.
Mind you, my mum did make very good sausage and egg pies...

Be grateful he reserved his good writing for his published works, and not the other way round!
I did hear a rumour that Jeffery Archer intended to write a book entitled The Road To Weston Super Mare Pier (before it burnt down)...

Talking of which Bob, you may be interested to know that every M.P. is due to receive a free copy of 1984 on November 5th, with a note stating 'this is not an instruction manual.'
Scottish M.P. Tom Harris has received his copy a bit early. You may be interested in the comments posted on his blog:
