Why the Tories persist with trivia

At the end of this piece by Melissa Kite in The Telegraph, she makes a really good point: Why do Tories bother with lads’ mags? First though, she savages Michael Gove, which is always a bit of fun:

Rarely does a politician make a statement so bizarre that it is ringing in your ears a week later. So congratulations to Michael Gove, whose attack on lads’ mags is still making my head ache.
The shadow schools secretary’s claim that pictures of scantily clad women encourage irresponsible behaviour by young men, leading to fatherless children, is so daft and hypocritical it’s hard to know where to begin. Hello? Earth calling Mr Gove!

But then she goes on to point out why the likes of Gove, Cameron Easy promises to breakand co. persist in making these ridiculous remarks:

Mr Cameron and his colleagues have managed to pointlessly attack kids’ clothing (too sexy), gangsta rap (too sweary), Jeremy Kyle (too tacky) and of course chocolate oranges (too chocolatey).
And they have made a point of not attacking hoodies (too misunderstood), or taxes (too difficult to cut).
They get themselves embroiled in trivia because they dare not promise anything on which they might be held accountable.
No one is going to go back to Mr Cameron a year after he takes office and ask him why he hasn’t tamed the media influences that contribute to bad fatherhood.
If he promised to make the trains run on time, however, we might demand he keep to it.

They would have had heart attacks in the 1960′s then with the micro mini skirt, they would have been in church praying to have the lust removed.

Also every time they announce a Policy Labour copy it ..badly. Melissa Kite is a notably useless writer by the way. They have actually said they may raise taxes.
    Not brave enough ?

  3. Boring boring boring. Yet another stupid political commentator who doesn’t understand the crass stupidity of Cameron setting out his policies up to two years ahead of an election.
Blair didn’t do it, Cameron shouldn’t do it. Go and write something useful, Melissa.

Except that is not quite her point LFaT. She is saying that Gove and co. are just headline grabbing, with no intention of doing anything at all about the stupid matters that they are raising. No-one is really surprised that Cameron hasn’t got any serious policies. Why on earth would he. Michael Howard made the mistake of raising proper alternatives and Blair either nicked them or tore them to shreds. It was a no-win game.
But all this garbage about ‘lads mags’ etc just smacks of a worse nanny state than New Labour.

You say that Bob I actually do not approve of the relentless misogyny of our chav culture. vbout time soemone did say you are allowed to disapprove
