Georgia on their minds   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

There must be a gale blowing in London if the sighs of relief are measured on the Beaufort scale. Both Downing Street and Fleet Street will be enormously relieved to see the outbreak of the conflict in Georgia and the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Of course, whilst I'm sure Gordon Brown will not be at all happy about the loss of life and the potential implications of the war in Georgia, I am equally sure he is very pleased to see Union Flag clad figures with Olympic gold medals. The fact is though, that both of these events have sent all the heavyweight hacks scurrying off to try their hands at real journalism and write some proper stories with at least a modicum of substance to them.

Sadly, it is clear no-one bothered to tell The Guardian's John Harris.

What do you think the voters will be watching and talking about today, bet it's not a war in far away places. I'll go with the Olympic Games, water rates on the rise, house prices falling, footie starting proper next week, the price of bread, oh and the weather. Bombing and such like, that's for you bloggers who pretend you care, really, really care, but then you're the same as the rest of us really, that's what we do so that we can enjoy the nice stuff, we pretend.

Whether deliberately or not, I'm not sure, but I'm afraid you rather missed the point. What i was writing about was what had attracted the media attention... not yours, you self-centred little git!

We're all self-centred , I however will not resort to calling you names. The press think this is the stuff of awards to be won, you talk about it because you think it is expected of you. Soon the other loonies who make up your blog will be piling in with advice, and it will be a time for you and them to put the world in order. You know I'm right you sanctimonious plonker, whoops.

I repeat... you completely miss the point. I wasn't writing about Georgia... or the Olympic Games, just about the fact that there will be a lot of people in the Labour Party are pleased that the media are concentrating their energies elsewhere.

I'm pleased it finally appears to have penetrated your skull that the media are writing about something else though.... because that was the point!

(Bloody hell, it's heavy going with some of these people - you have to explain everything to them - please, someone tell me they can't vote.)

Can't vote, can't vote indeed, these people, these bloody people are the folk who voted Labour all their poor miserable lives . But now we're old, poor, and poorly you pick on us, calling us names, that's not called for you'll be old one day too, I've told matron what you said.

Have you tried newmania's blog, Mike. I think you might find a comfortable home with a kindred spirit there.

Good point, even Mrs Dale is more concerned by the petty squabbles between two British divers in the Olympics than Gordon's failure to comment on genocide in Georgia.

The PM is right to stand up for Georgia. It is a small country being bullied by a big country. End of story. This is why we need the EU to protect small countries from big geopolitical games from big nations.

Does anyone nottice that when the UK PM finally commented on the crisis russia pulled out. The PM must terrify the russians.

60 per cent of Russia's exports go to the EU.
Russia stopping trade with the nations on it's western border would decimate it's economy. While the EU would just buy the oil of someone else. As small nations we can be bullied by russia as a union they are subservient to us. Euroskeptics hate this fact. But it is the simple truth, as was the case in the cold war. No russian leader would want to make a enemy of the UNion In fact it would be better for them to join. It is noticable when the president bush spoke it had no impact on russia,. when the UK PM and the french leader spoke they stopped. But the euroskeptics media will not report this fact as it pains them to accept common sense.
