If, over the last five years, you haven't followed the best TV show since the invention of the radio, then be prepared for the media onslaught over the next few days as the previews begin for of the fifth and final series of The Wire starting on FX next Monday. I'm grateful to Tom Watson for this (even though his link didn't work). The thought that McNulty in The Wire, was a public schoolboy at Eton with David Cameron is absolutely bizarre, but apparently true.
I was aware that the actor who played Tommy Carcetti was Irish, and that the 'Stringer' Bell character was born in Hackney, but Jimmy McNulty... Eton.... Naaahh!

I've already seen the fifth series, thanks to a friend in the US. I have to say it was mildly disappointing compared to the others - the story felt slightly exaggerated and suffered from having three episodes cut due to the writers strike.
That said, below-par The Wire is still miles better than anything else on TV. But, for me, the third and fourth series were the absolute stand-outs.
The last series of The Shield will be on later this year, which means the second-best show on TV comes to an end too.
