Back in the day- the 70s- Birnbeck Pier was always the better. It is ironic that Birnbeck's buildings remain and are being regenerated soon.
I wish the Grand's staff and customers all the best for a quick rebuild. The signs, however, are not good. The West Pier in Brighton is still a burnt-out rusting hulk after its fire; the award-winning Clevedon Pier is much smaller and was rebuilt by dedicated townspeople who refused to let their small town die, and regarding bigger towns, the Pier Pavilion at Llandudno is still burnt out over 10 years after its fire, with no sign of it being rebuilt anytime soon...
Well ahem actually Bob these piers are often owned by dubious Property developers and are protected rendering priceless development opportunities worthless.
They are insured and I have arranged it myself on occasion and should they burn down courtesy of the local Pikey petrol squad then its a good deal for one and all. Private Eye have followed the career of one Pier owner who has been” unlucky" twice. Actually on this occasion it looks straight given the development of the site
The BBC keep saying you can see the smoke 'as far away as Cardiff'. But that's no bid deal as Weston has always been visible from Cardiff on a clear day. As a bored teenager I used to sit on a beech near Barry and watch the stubble burn on Somerset farms (although that’s been banned now).
