There seems to be only one political issue in Ireland at the moment (well, apart from whether or not Derty Bertie was on the take) and that is the forthcoming referendum on the Lisbon Treaty.
Throughout the Republic lampposts and telegraph poles are adorned with posters, and the news channels are consumed with gossip about the campaign. However, my straw poll amongst the drinkers in. the pubs in Doonbeg indicate that no-one has got the foggiest idea what it is all about.
As someone who favours a referendum in the UK, it is profoundly depressing.
I suspect a low turnout is on the cards. Was it Woody Allen who said the world is run by those who turn up?

I can only hope that the anti-EU campaign has got the message through, especially after the way the Irish government has tried to manipulate the vote.
