Benn's backing for a Tory is wrong   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

Harry Barnes has an 8th reason for Why he is not a Bennite. I didn't entirely agree with Harry on his first seven, but I do on this. Tony has always had a lot of respect on the left of the party, but I'm afraid actively campaigning for a right-wing Tory because he agrees with him on a single issue seems completely bonkers.

Having said that, Benn never did personalise his politics, and his diaries are littered with references to Enoch Powell or Ian Paisley being quite agreeable characters in person. But that almost makes it worse. By conceding that Davis is right on 42 days he then endorses his election campaign, and talks pure unadulterated rubbish about... "David's courage in fighting it - people will look back in the future and say 'thank God'." Frankly, I suspect they are much more likely to forget it completely, unless they are thinking back to celebrated political stunts.

In contrast, Sadie Smith has got it absolutely right.

Sorry, but you are wrong. This 42-day detention issue goes beyond party politics.

Tony Benn's willingness to put principle before party is why he so respected even by those who think he is badly wrong on so many issues.

There was a danger Kelvin Mackenzie would defeat Davis and that would have set things back. But given that it looks like Davis will have no serious opponent there's no reason to pay any attention.

Sadie Smith as flippant & dishonest as one would expect from a loyalist. The more 42 days is discussed, the more the public turn against it & the inital opinion polls become invalidated thereby. No one has a chance of defeating Davis, & I for one am supporting him against lowlife like Smith, Akehurst, McKenzie, Paisley, Murdoch etc.

I believe that if this ever goes through it will be repealed soon, & we'll see a bonfire of the restrictions NuLab have placed on our civil liberties, using the excuse of counter-terrorism, but without any genuine interest in fighting terrorism...

But before that happens, we should randomly arrest leading members of NuLab, the DUP, the Tory party & the scum press, & hold them without charge for 42 days, just so they can see what it's like.

Because they thought only wogs would be affected, but we can make it affect them. Afterwards, we'll give them & the population in general back their freedom. But not before they learn what overbearing state power means.

You yourself are exempt from these charges, as you have maintained your decency, but you surely must ask yourself what you are still doing in the same party as these types. If Brown is going to lose, he should do something radical that Cameron would never dare undo... but that is ever more obviously never going to happen.

Looks like I'll have to emigrate to Sweden. Perhaps you should go as well :)

Civil Liberties goes beyond personalisation, Bob.
Therefore as this is a single issue election, then I believe you to be wrong.

Civil Liberties defeat David Davis on his hanging and flogging agenda and I'm quite capable of knowing what is actually going on here.

He has pleaded with Cameron to publicly suggest that an incoming Tory Government will delete 42 days from the public domain.

He failed to get this and has resigned on principle.

Principles can be costly and Tollpuddle martyrs suffered by far more that Him, you and I.

It goes without saying that my MP voted against and it also goes without saying that our MP had a standing ovation the other night for doing so. The case was put for an extension of 28 days and the whole meeting laughed.

But the peoples republic hangs it's head in shame (don't go there Gary).

However, we have a new recruit in Paul Farrely MP (Newcastle under Lyme)and we will reward him accordingly and promote him as our Foreign Secretary.

A bit strange, though, Comrade, don't you think? Talk about 'not wrestling with chimney sweeps'........?
