One down, two to go...   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

Just a week or so before the local government election fiasco, I wrote that Gordon Brown needed to do 3 things start to restore confidence in his government.

Well, the 10p tax rate problem has been sorted, and it appears that the 42-day detention issue may well be on the way to some form of resolution.

So, just the id card matter to go and then we can try to move forward.

"some form of resolution"?! You must be joking. His actions, as with the 10p tax rate, are the result of fear - not seeing sense.

As I covered on my blog this morning, he is now backing down even though this completely contradicts what he has been saying recently about 42-day detention. If only the Labour government had some decent principles to stick to, he wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.

Asked if the Prime Minister was trying to signal a different position regarding 42 days, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was not trying to signal any change in his position on 42 days at all.

Bob, on a scale of 1-10 (1 being dead and don't care and 10 being overjoyed and full of life), what score do you think this failed candidate would give now that Gordon&co have listened?

I am now firmly in the camp of 'MPs don't give a flying **** about local councillors, candidates and party workers'.

25 years it has taken me to get to this point.
If I had not been a candidate, I would have been very much OK with current events, post election.

By the way, if I used the term 'Government' instead of MPs it would let them off the hook and I want the hook to be well barbed.

Gary, I think you make a good point, although from what you've said, local leadership didn't exactly help your chances.

Gary - start a blog - get your ideas out there and not just in peoples' comments. If you already have, please accept my apologies....But give us a link, eh?

Bob - but it's just papering over the cracks. I'm not a member of any party (although I recently found out via Harry's Place that I may be strongly influenced by the Revolutionary Communist Party), I don't really care about which party is in charge, except Gary's oppos and Respect, perhaps. But the things you're asking for are: no change from before - small c conservatism - sound enough.
They're desperate to appear to be seen to be doing something, anything and yet it's the last thing we need.

PS - is the 10p tax rate fixed for good, or for a year?

Do you think he's listening and reacting or just running scared

IAF - I'd say, for good. Fingers burnt, and all that. Also, I'm not asking for 'no change'. i just don't want another bloody gimmicky initiative announced for the benefit of the media before breakfast, every day! Not too much to ask.

Bob,

These are matters for the chattering classes only.

The Great British Public does not give a damn for any liberterian argument on 42 days detention or ID cards.

Bob, you say this is fixed for good but I have not heard Gordon, Alistair or even Frank saying so.

If it is fixed for good, why don't they say so? It isn't that it is a difficult thing to say.

GW - you may well be right, but a lot of party members do.

@ GW

And a lot of people that comment on blogs are clueless but Bob still lets you play here. If you or anyone else thinks that ID cards are a good idea then you should give it a bit more thought and do some research before blaming the "chattering classes".
