Lazy-Arsed Journalism   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

20080525_p1_small.jpgToday in The Independent on Sunday there is a story of such seismic significance it took not one, but two journalists to research and write it. It is so important it stands as the lead story on The Indy website as I write and on the front page of the paper. Under a banner headline Reality check: the election is two long years away (which actually seems to be totally unrelated to the story below it) The Indy (on Sunday) hacks Jane Merrick and Brian Brady tell us that....

Left-winger Cruddas invited to stand as stalking horse leadership candidate as pressure on PM mounts
Now, the notion of the centre-left and centre-right uniting behind a 'Get Gordon' campaign, is a really important story. So I've read the piece four times now to try to work out who is the source of this exclusive leak to our investigative chums. In the first paragraph we are told...
A leading left-wing Labour MP has been approached by Blairite plotters to run as a possible "stalking horse" to unseat Gordon Brown, it was revealed yesterday.
Revealed by who? And who did they reveal it too? I'm afraid I can't tell you that, because the intrepid Jane and Brian forgot to tell us that bit. All we find out is that, errm....
Jon Cruddas has been sounded out by Charles Clarke about a move to represent a "coalition of the left and right" of the party to challenge the embattled Prime Minister.
Although they do go on to tell us that...
Mr Cruddas told friends last night he is "not interested" in becoming a stalking horse.
But don't let that simple denial of a non-story put you off, because the dynamic duo then increase the feverish speculation....
But the extraordinary disclosure reveals the extent of behind the scenes machinations to get rid of Mr Brown.
What extrordinary bleeding disclosure!!!

This appears to be what passes for journalism in the world of today's Independent newspaper. An irrelevant headline, followed by a made up 'revelation' that is never actually revealed, compounded by a denial of an unrelated point and then wrapped up in a general mish-mash of tosh and unsubstantiated assertions. It is the sort of thing that our intrepid reporters Jane and Brian could have knocked out on a word processor without leaving the office or even picking up the phone... or scribbled out on a notepad whilst quaffing a bottle of chardonnay and dipping into the free olives in the Annabella wine bar.

What a complete load of irrelevant tosh! I'm willing to bet 500 quid with anyone that Jon Cruddas does not get egged on by Charles Clarke in an attempt to challenge Gordon Brown. But of course, Jane and Brian will say, "We know, we said that in the piece, didn't we?" And yes, they did. But I could write a piece saying that exclusive sources have revealed to me that John Prescott is being urged to jump naked off Tower Bridge. Then I could include a line from Prescott saying he had no plans to visit Tower Bridge.

If the editor of The Independent wants the rest of this "exclusive" I'll see you at Annabella at about 7pm next thursday.

Bring your cheque book, son.

Bob. We know that since Gordon's 'non election' the press, deprived of weeks of comment and speculation would give him a kicking. That honest, distinguished and respected seeker of truth Quentin Letts confirmed that on the green outside the HoC. And that's exactly what's happened.
This is just another, relentlessly lying, par for the course article, which gullible readers will believe to be true and who don't realise that papers have an agenda and hunt in a pack. There is no honesty in the print media, only opinion and comment. And as for your summing up of this article - thanks for bringing it to my attention - and one might wish it would shame the authors, but we know it won't.

I shouldn't worry about the Indescribablysparty too much. Most sane people stopped reading it when it started all those front-page op-ed pieces telling us to stick on our hairshirts and live in complete self-denial forever. Some of us would rather be extinct.

To be honest it's all getting a bit ridiculous now.Apparently this person and that person are going to launch a leadership bid but the named person always denies it when approached. We are now getting into the territory of the papers simply making stuff up in the hope that someone will believe all the bullshit and come forward.Yes we are all fed up, we think Brown needs to do something- something permanent on tax and social housing would be nice, yes we think there are duffers in the cabinet, but no one I have spoken to thinks ditching Brown would make a jot of difference. I'm assuming the media will eventually end this once they realise their readership/viewers get bored.

It is important to remember that despite being part of a global media empire, the Indy has probably the smallest editorial budget of any national (although the Sport and Express are pretty close). It has a small staff and its freelance rates are very low (around a quarter of what the Daily Mail pays).

This is why it has no option but to be a viewspaper, rather than a newspaper and make up stuff like this.

It aspires to be to the Guardian what the Daily Express is to the Daily Mail i.e. a cheap knock-off.

I'm not surprised. This is a paper that re-launched with less content, but at the same price, because it was trying to entice people who don't have time to read much on a Sunday. I don't think they reckoned with people who don't have time to read much but like to have a bit of choice for their money.

I was only 10 when Major took over from the old handbag so I can't really remember but were the knives out for him from the start as well? If so we've got about five or six years of these sorts of headlines before anything changes, because he survived actual challenges to his leadership rather than mere speculation, so there really is very little point in it.

I thought it was a very interesting article actually. By the way is it true that some MPs are trying to persuade Tony Blair to make a comeback?

The indie is truly shite.

At least they're putting news on the front page now.

Well, I say 'news'...

It is lazy journalism, Bob. All credit to you for reading it four times to see if you were missing something. I don't think I would have read half of it before moving on to something else. Perhaps they shouldn't have dropped the dead donkey.
