Having your cake and eating it   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

What a strange to-do. Boris Johnson is to announce that he thinks illegal immigrants who have avoided detection for four years should be given an amnesty and allowed to remain in the country. Nothing particularly wrong about that in my opinion, and Jack Dromey has been banging this particular drum for some years now.

However, his Old Etonian Bullingdon buddy doesn't seem so keen on the idea according to The Times, and if you read The Daily Heil he becomes even less enthusiastic, to the extent of 'slapping down' Johnson.

Of course, the reality is, Johnson knows that any decision on an amnesty for immigrants is nothing to do with the Mayoralty, so why is he raising it? Well, if you were really cynical you would read Johnson appealing to the ethnic vote in The Observer, and Cameron damping (or slapping) it down for the dog whistle Tory voters in The Times and The Heil.

It's called having your cake and eating it.

A bit like a referendum on the Lisbon treaty.

All mouth, but if they get in 2010, there will be no referendum of any sorts.

Odd that.

Boris is an MP as well as the future Mayor of London so it is his business.

When Gordon realized he'd dropped a clanger in his last budget, taking from the poor and giving to the rich. He should have held up his hands and told all he was sorry. That he would not sleep until he had personally fixed it. The guy would have been cheered by the voters, and ridiculed by the papers. But Gordon surely would have known that papers don't vote, and people do. Sadly not to be,nobody cheered, and the poor just got poorer. New Labour is beginning to lose it's appeal with this supporter.

As a Policy it makes sense because at the moment immigration figures are such lies that Councils cannot cope with all the invisible people they have to look after. Surely you would agree ? Boris is accentuating the problems faced by London Boroughs because he is running for Mayor but his remarks are in the context of a Conservative immigration Policy which would , by the way , be supported by , ethnic minorities as well as the indigenous English , ie capping the numbers .
(Under a Labour Government , of course , it would be madness. We would be having another amnesty and another as in Spain.)
.In my years in London I often noticed that those who approved of torrential immigration usually lived in the white suburbs and simply had no idea what was going on in the City. If you drive through Islington you would not even notice the Andover estate which is largest , apparently, in Europe .I think Boris wants an honest debate with the facts established and no more dumping every social problem in the kingdom on London so no-one has to look. In seven boroughs the numbers of first language English speakers in the public education system is a minority. Polly Toynbee with one house in Italy one in Lewes and Pied de Terre for her London trips is all in favour but then her children went to Public school.

The overall approach must be firm fair and transparent to the people whose lives are being affected .Just because Boris is dealing with one arc of the triangle does not mean he does not support the other two . Conservatives trust Boris on this with or without Cameron and the point he is making is a lot more interesting than you have given him credit for.

Gary...The Conservative Party have honoured their manifesto commitment and are more sceptical than the nation. We cannot be ahead of the wishes of the British people many of whom are only just catching on to the grotesque fraud perpetrated by the progressive establishment . Furthermore ,people are sick of Politicians who , when they do not like the question in front of them answer another of their own choosing . Quite a few Labour MP`s ,to their credit, would agree.

Boris doesn't need to get involved in this. Immigration is a national debate and the future Mayor shouldn't be worrying about this.

Quite right LfaT. My suspicion is that he is attempting to appear liberal, knowing perfectly well that Cameron would not implement the policy anyway.
