Martin Kettle says... ...put your money on a May 6 2010 election now. It's a cert, guv'nor. But I reckon June 2010, 2009 (Thanks Hack) is still a fair bet, although tying the general election in with the European elections is bound to make senior Labour people a bit edgy.

May 2010 will be going right to the wire, as Sunny Jim did in '79, and it doesn't leave any wriggle room, but John Major won in '92 as a 'new' Prime Minister in an old government.

You pays yer money and takes yer choice... but Kauto Star in the Gold Cup looks a safer bet than both options to me.

I think you must mean June 2009 which was my banker until last autumn's shall we, shan't we fiasco. It would probably mean three elections on one day for many people (local + Europe + general) and I'm not sure that the shall we, shan't we brigade could decide whether that was a good thing or a bad thing in time - they've only got 14 months to ponder! So Mr K may well be correct...
