Premature Speculation

Anything up to a couple of years away from the next General Election the one thing that still surprises me is how those closely involved with politics appear to think everyone else is consumed by it too. So, in July, the Tory leaning Political Betting asked this question: Should Dave put his leadership on the line? It was an attempt at a strategy to rescue David Cameron from bad poll ratings. Today, Political Betting asks us: Should we now be thinking about the succession? in response to poor Labour polling results.
I’m sure all this is great fun for the gambling fraternity, but I suspect these crystal-ball gazers, who in the past have cocked things up on the eve of polling day, are of absolutely no relevance whatsoever to a general election result in possibly two years time.
Still, it fills the chip paper I suppose, and gives employment to pundits and journalists who have nothing better to do. Let’s wait and see what happens when the nasty party start talking about policies again.

Mike Smithson was a founding member of the Lib Dems, and still is – I think.
He stood for them for Parliament in 1992.

Perhaps it’s a case of “a plague on both their houses”.
