Dave's dilemma   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

Now, hold your breath, I'm only going to say this once.

I agree with every sentiment David Cameron uttered in his speech today on the issue of rape.

Having said that... it is easy to come up with sweeping generalisations about the issue, and much more difficult to implement. The sexual act, consensual or otherwise, is more often than not a private act between two people, and frequently they are two people who know each other. There are no witnesses, and if the woman hasn't resisted out of fear it is difficult, if not impossible to obtain any forensic evidence. In our confrontational legal system the process of trial can be an incredible ordeal for a woman who has already been traumatised by the rape. So whilst I agree with Cameron that much can be done, I frankly have serious doubts that young men committing rape will think twice because someone told them in a sex education lesson when they were 8 years old that it was wrong.

But that leads to the other major dilemma in Dave's speech. If you are going to hand over control of hospitals and schools to the professionals 'because they know best what is in the interests of their patients and pupils'... how do you square that with a Conservative government saying... "this is what you will teach"?

Yes but all the stats were wrong, well 70% wrong and he has a first class honours degree and a team of researchers so he must have known that?

I'd bring in lie detectors me. And I'd stop the police from sliding cases out the back door. Like the one mentioned at the link. Alleged perp and his police chat friend = elected representatives.
