Disgruntled fans of Sheffield Wednesday who vented their dissatisfaction with the football club's bigwigs in anonymous internet postings may face expensive libel claims after the chairman, chief executive and five directors won a high-court ruling last week forcing the owner of a website to reveal their identity.
But the judge decided some fans, whose postings were merely "abusive" or likely to be understood as jokes, should keep their anonymity.
The judge ordered that three fans whose postings might "reasonably be understood to allege greed, selfishness, untrustworthiness and dishonest behaviour", should be unmasked.
So, Doug, when I called you a greedy bloodsucking leech who had lined his pockets through my club... I was only being 'merely abusive' or joking, mate!
The fighting between the board and a section of fans has been going for for a while now at Hillsborough. It stems from a supporters' group backing Ken Bates' attempt to take over the club. The problems was that the shares this group owned had been given to them by the current board!
Dave Allen (chairman) has taken it all a bit personally, and has tried to make the life of a few supporters miserable. Words were said at the AGM, and I think Allen has decided he's had enough.
Problem is he and his chums don't own fifty percent of the shares, so if he wants to sell up, the new owners will have to deal with Allen and the supporters group. It's already scuppered a deal with Carson Yeung, and I can see this one running and running...
It amazes me that they can put out a half decent team at all, with all the in-fighting and the millstone of a £20 million debt.
That said, mugs like me will still pay our money and go and watch. I've already spotted a clash on the 6th Novemeber: Wednesday playing the Baggies, or our local Labour meeting. That's going to be a difficult one for me to call. Too many more 4-2 away victories and I think I know where I'll be heading...!
