Still madly spinning   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

Andy Howell at Political Futures welcomes Brown's speech as not just dull, but masterfully dull. 'After years of spin and hype it is wonderful to have such an unpretentious leader at the helm'... says Andy. Well, I can certainly go along with the 'wonderful to have a new Leader' bit, but I'm not so sure about the 'no spin' element. In fact, I would go as far as to say that Labour are spinning madly, and the message they are spinning is exactly that slogan.... Not Flash, Just Gordon.

After month upon month of Tory commentators beaming at slippery Dave doing his Blair impressions and pointing out how he would wipe the floor with dull old Gordon, they are now flabbergasted to discover that people didn't want another Blair, in fact, they were relieved to get rid of the original.

So, what better than to push the very image of Brown that the Tories had created for us. Yes, Labour are spinning... but it was that little bit of help from the Tories that helped to get the message off the ground. So don't criticise the Tory boy bloggers, you can thank them for their efforts.

If Gordon is said to be involved in anti-spin spin; what has he to do not be be charged with spinning? For me he can spin as much as he wants to - if only he will spin what I want him to spin.

My first time commenting on your new blog Bob. Looks good. I tend to agree with you re public's boredom with any 'celeb' style politics. But I was soooo bored by Gordon's speech: full of rhetorical vagueness and empty promises. Having said that, those critics who called his speech a 'polo' one in that it was all surround and no content, have to consider how on earth he could go into such manifesto style detail in a conference where speeches are rigorously time limited? I also have to say I am not impressed by the nascent personality cult growing around the Brown clan leadership: all that quoting Gordon's speeches is another yawn-making tendency.
