Don't ask me what all those peculiar letters are that appear where an apostrophe should be... I've no idea but it is something which happens from time to time since the server switch.

Those peculiars letters are a sign that something's wrong with the character encoding.

See Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_encoding for lots of gory details you never wanted to know about character encoding; it's highly technical and totally confusing even for geeks :-).

Hope that information explains things a bit. If you don't want to publish this comment, that's perfectly fine; no need to clutter the blog with my off-topic geek stuff!

Hi Bob, it is a character encoding problem, specifically 1 line in the generated pages which currently reads

meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"

but needs to be changed to

meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"

I'm hoping to fit fixing this in this weekend.

I was embarrassed somewhat by an intelligent off-blog comment that, well, frankly I don't know defamation from toffee.

Turns out Fast Hosts, despite being the worst web host in the world on most counts, behaved quite typically in their reaction to the Schillings letter. The linked post includes quotes and links explaining why the Law is siding with Usmanov on this one.

Perhaps as a Labour Councillor on the wrong end of a lawyers letter you would consider exerting some influence to get the Law changed?
