Cameron threatens to force Mayoral referenda   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

So, David Cameron intends (in the unlikely event of his becoming Prime Minister) to force a referendum to be held in our major cities on the issue of having an elected Mayor and seems quite willing to leave an embarrassed Birmingham Council Leader Mike Whitby squirming in his boxer shorts whilst he does tells everyone.

One of the reasons Cameron cites in favour of an elected Mayor is that they "raise turnout in elections". Is this correct? I really don't know, although I have a vague recollection of concern being expressed about low turnouts during the first round of mayoral elections about five years ago and even lower turnouts in the various referenda to decide whether to have a mayor. Perhaps someone could help me with this one.
