Via The Stirrer Sandwell Councillor Bill Archer (Aged 107) demonstrates that beneath the froth and gloss of the Notting Hill Set of Tories, the same old out-of-date duffers and buffoons are still lurking below the surface. So, WebCammy can do his bit to attract young mothers by making a big fuss about taking paternity leave, that's OK but when a working class Labour councillor who has a young family and a full-time job decides to put his family first, old fossils like Bill Archer think they can fill a few newspaper column inches by taking a cheap shot at him. What next Archer? Send kids up chimneys, just like the good old days? Bring back rationing and ricketts? Get real.
Obviously Bill Archer thinks being a Labour Councillor in Sandwell is much more important than leading the Conservative Party... and on that point at least I think I can agree with him.
Congratulations Simon! It's no easier second time round though mate.
"Bring back rationing" - How else do you propose to cut childhood obesity!?!
I understood that Britain was a healthier nation during the Second World War (apart from the bombs, shrapnel and bullets!) than now thanks to rationing and the focus on eating the right foods!

I think foreign travel was more dangerous though, but why am I not surprised that you want to take us back to the good old days? Why, way back before the war the Tories used to win elections, so not all nostalgia is good.

Gareth, I wasn't implying rationing caused ricketts, simply that they are products of a bygone age that Archer seems to hanker after.

Snafu is mostly right on rationing during WW2.
However, it should be noted that the rich were rationed down and the poor were rationed up.
A balance across the Nation was struck and health rose across the board.
Oh, how the rich hated that set of circumstances and relied on the corrupt police officers to burgle houses and farms for the black market enterprises.
Today, the rich just get their cheque books out and buy their way out of trouble and into better health.
Point was proven though, that the centrally organised food distribution was successful for a Country. Nationalisation followed as a consequence.

Bob if I knew it upset the local tories so much I wouldn't have had a vasectomy.
Congrtaulations Simon
Bob, aah, the good old days, when Tories were Tories, Labour represented the working classes and the Unions were all powerful...
Gary, I'm not convinced that nationalisation of the food industry would solve childhood
obesity! Except if it was run as a typical public sector outfit that created large food queues in some parts of the country and large surpluses elsewhere!
Bill Archer is nothing more than a "media slut" he doesn't engage his brain when he talks out his arse!!!!
But still it is very sad to think that this is all he's got to moan about, looking at the state of the leadership in his own party locally and nationally.
