On Coffee and Cruddas   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

As the starting gun is fired in the Deputy Leadership election, Tom Watson hits the floor running with his support for Jon Cruddas. and Jon writes in Comment is Free.

"Labour lost nearly 5 million voters from 1997 to 2005, and not to the Tories. Four broad elements can be detected in this change: a significant movement away from us among workers in the public services; among black and minority ethnic voters; and among those described by marketing experts as "urban intellectuals"; and a huge shift away from us among working-class voters, especially manual workers. These voters did not go to the Tories, they went to the BNP and other nationalist groupings, the Liberals and Respect. Or they simply stayed at home."

Hope you are both enjoying yourselves. Let hope Jon gets enough nominations. Class analysis like music to the ears. Jon is spot on, the increase in employment in services industries and the expansion not contraction in low paid jobs as been neglected by those who develop party policy. If re -engaging with these people
who should be our supporters is a lurch to the left then lets lurch to the left. But is the party ready for it? there is alot to do internally in the party which Jon acknowledges before we can think about re-engaging with those we have caste aside.See you soon

Labour should be really worried if it has lost it's public sector and ethnic minority block vote...

I thought the ethnic minority vote was the primary reason for having uncontrolled immigration over the last ten years - it's certainly not the "economic benefits"!!

I dunno, Howard increased the Tory vote, I think Cameron is winning people from the lib dems that deserted labour too.
