Top 100 British Films   » Permalink  |  TrackBack (0)

The Fat Man in the Bathtub is struggling to think of good British films to appear in a BBC poll of the top 100 British films. Mine would include The Life of Brian, Trainspotting, Secrets and Lies, The Full Monty and almost anything by Ken Loach... but specifically Land and Freedom and The Wind that Shakes the Barley.

Speaking about secrets and lies. Here's a plot for a good English film. It concerns a so-called political blogger who we shall call Guido. To cut a long story short, he posts a story on Levy which he claims he has read in today's papers. An undercover reporter called spot the liar challenged Guido to provide a link to these newspapers reports. A sock puppet tried to dig Guido out of trouble, by providing a link to a different story in Sunday's Observer. Unfortunately, our undercover reporter hastily went to print and referred to today as being Tuesday when it is Wednesday. Another sock puppet pointed out this mistake which was corrected by jailhouselawyer who was really spot the liar. If nobody has come up with the title yet, perhaps the film can be called Liar, Liar?

I find the film, 'the piano' to be quite remarkable and was justifiably rewarded at the oscars.

Lets face it - British film has been pretty dire for a very long time and probably will be for some time to come. I can't think of more than two good ones that are of note for any other reason than that they're British.

Kes remains one of my favourites. I just happened to be walking past the bookshop in Leeds, at the time, where a scene for Kes was being shot.

I'm going to be a soppy romantic and say Truly Madly Deeply which if memory serves me correctly was made by the BBC and Alan Rickman was excellent in.

'Carry On Cleo' 1964. Just for Kenneth Williams' line "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got in for me."
Having brought up teenagers I know the feeling only too well.
