There is absolutely no doubt that the issue that will 'do for the Tories' is Europe. They simply detest the entire concept, no less now than they did under Major over 10 years ago. Just read the spite and vitriol they spout in the comments here from the pro and anti-kippers.
The reality is that smooth boy Dave, sometime before the next election, will have to extract the splinters from his arse, get off the fence, and tell the horse thieves where he stands on Europe. The moment he does that, those who think the nanny state meant Thatcher giving them a sound spanking before breakfast will be on their way out of the door.
Bob, don't agree with you too often, but you are bang on the money here. To get there though the government, and especially the new prime minister, will have to abandon the tactic of appeasing Comrades Murdoch and Dacre on this issue.
And even if Cameron opts for a softer position of Europe than say IDS ever did, the fact that he only has two policies and one is to end people's rights to paid holiday by leaving the social chapter is an election winner all on its own. (His other policy is to bring back fox hunting!!)
