Bob Piper has been a Labour Councillor for the Abbey
Ward in Sandwell, West Midlands, for nine years. He is a lifelong supporter of Aston Villa Football Club and a follower of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
The views expressed here are mine in a personal capacity, not those of the Labour Party, Sandwell MBC, Aston Villa or Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Get it! Mine... just mine!
Firstly, can I say that what follows are my own thoughts and I have not been influenced or pressurised in any way by the Labour Party, the Leader of the Council, or my constituents, but now that the circus has moved on and we’re back to the regular 200-300 sad buggers who drop by here every day, I need time to take stock… and to take a rest.
I have decided to take a break from blogging. The intention of this site in the first place, influenced by Tom Watson and Bloggerheads, was to entertain, inform, and yes, provoke a bit too. I’ve had some good banter with folks over the last couple of years, some of it on both sides getting a bit tetchy and even abusive from time to time.
I never took it personally, and if others did, perhaps I’m now in a better position to understand that…. but throughout it all, I quite enjoyed it… until this last week. Some people decided I had gone too far and said so. We had some banter, but then it got totally out of control and I have had a weekend of the most vile abuse, partially provoked by a Conservative who accused me of being sympathetic to the BNP on his blog site.
For someone of my political views, that and the abuse that followed, much of it from far right organisations, has been unacceptable, so, for the time being at least… count me out of your games.
Before finishing, can I thank all of those who have contacted me by e-mail with their support, including from some quite surprising sources. I’ve no intention of naming individuals because the list is currently nearly 200 long. I’m trying to reply to everyone personally, but if I omit anyone, you know who you are anyway.
I’m sure I’m going to miss it, but life goes on. It is only a break for reflection. I may return with one of those councillor sites with “Last night I went to Planning Committee…”. I’m not being critical, but I’ve got a Council site to do that if I want to, or perhaps a Bob Piper site without the councillor bit. Perhaps I should return as PragueLabour and snipe from the shadows, it would be a bit of fun, I suppose.
Alternatively, in the New Year I could return as just grumpy old Councillor Bob and try to think a bit before posting.
As Tricky Dicky said on his way out in 1962… "You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore, because, gentleman, this is my last press conference." Six years later he was President of the United States.
Se ya!
Oh, and finally, can I leave you with this. Annoyingly easy at times, and for those 'of a certain age'... but see if you can beat my 84%

I'm genuinely sorry to hear that, Bob; another victory for those who would remove character from political debate. I hope you rethink this decision and return just as you are, not in a sanitised version that disconnects us even further from our elected officials.
Take a break over Christmas, and come back firing on all cylinders in the New Year - I'll still be out here fighting the good fight.
And it goes without saying that if the CRE, SBE or even the Party want to try and make anything more of this, then you have the means to contact me and I'll be backing you up all the way, even if it means breaking my own shield of anonymity.
Now you'll have to excuse me - I'm just off to rip a Tory MP a new orifice...
Blogging is an emerging medium - a bit like a kid who gets his first pocket money.
In other words, now and again, you have a licence to be a prat with it.
I hope you don't go away for too long. Most of the criticism, as far as I can see, is posturing and callithump.

It is sad to see you stop blogging as your blog has always been a good read but you are probably correct a time of reflection is needed. I have read your blog for a while now and was very disappointed to see the Cameron posting. I was further disappointed that you dug your heels in and didn't take it down when people were saying that they found it offensive. Anyone can make a mistake but refusing to take it down added to the condemnation.
Due to your status and popularity what you say makes a difference, "With greatness comes great responsibility". You note no real flack has hit MoT.
Anyway as Charles Dickens once said "Reflect upon your present blessings - of which every man has many - not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some."

There is comedy and there are errors of judgement. There are also racists.
Come along Bob, everyone knows what's going on around here and those that don't, just haven't got a clue and shouldn't be given any pointers to give them help.
Mel Brookes gives a black man a sheriffs badge and brings the house down.
Monty Python makes Brian famous.
Bob Piper makes Dave a minstrel, and as is usual, the closet racists come out to play and attempt tp get their own back.
The diffesnce between that scum and the Labour councillor is that they will, and would, allow by their own direct action, bring harm upon a black primary school girl and her family.
A Labour councillor wouldn't do that.
Hitlerism and Fascism was a democratically appointed political sytem that gave racists the right to use deliberate acts against their fellow human beings that ultimately caused serious harm, if not death upon them. Fascism gave it social credibility.
To suggest that a Labour councillor would give sanction to such a crime, that we now know to be criminal acts against humanity,is a nonsense.
I make the claim here that Conservatives in 1930's-45 and beyond were indeed closet fascists and attempted to land Hitler and install Oswald Mosley as a puppet Fascist Dictator with the intent of bypassing Government wishes and Democracy.
I could go on and name many names and one Daily Newspaper that funded this aim.( F*** em, it was the Daily Mail).
Bob it is with VAST knowledge of Fascist hunting that gives me the absolute right to hunt and name fascist/racists and heap shame upon their ameaturish attempts of public bravado
You Bob, are just not in the frame.
Do as I do and tell them all to ***** *** and move on. The racist needs a victim. Labour councillors don't.
very simple.
Good luck Bob.
That is very disappointing. The blogosphere is the only place where - amid all the spin and the political correctness - there is real debate in Britain. You could not possibly be more wrong in almost everything you say, but you should keep saying it.
I hope you change your mind.

Unity has said what I want to say. I'm fairly new to the political blogosphere, but I really don't want to see a fellow Labour blogger give up, so let me add my voice to those asking you to hurry back.
Bloody hell kid don't join the Paul Macmanomy serial resigners club (it was a joke I didn't mean to offend you by implying that you had lived a good wee while - honest).
Now I've had my period of reflection and made a less than spectacular comeback you abandon me in my hour of need!
Seriously the world (or as we like to call it Walsall) will be a duller and less well informed place until you are fully rested and come storming back - by the way we are planning the Christmas bash are you available for snifter or several hundred next thursday?
Proud of you always!
you made an error of judgment in posting the image but that doesn't justify anyone giving you abuse of any kind-apart from the usual blog banter. I doubt we would agree on much politically, but you should definitely not stop blogging and airing your views because of this episode. I agree with Unity (and that's not going to happen much either)
66% - not bad for a simpering pop fan too young to remember the anything before the Royal Wedding...
I think there's a danger that you will look like you are throwing your toys out of the pram by closing the blog. Either stand by your comments or apologise and move on. We all say silly things in our blogs (or even our comments on Iain Dale's blog!) but we should be able to take the criticism due to us, and that all we give each other, and move on.
A-ha. This may shock you, it did me: 62%! "This is a respectable score: you're neither know-nothing nor nerd." You've taught me well.

Don't do it Bob!
Pack in the councillors job and go full time blogging! Get some skyscraper ads down the right hand side, some google adwords etc... maybe go pay per view.
No - you should resign as a councillor and not as a blogger. Your constituents should know how dreadful your political judgement is by the way you posted what you posted.
Politics is for some people. For others it certainly isn't. Get out before you get, deservedly, thrown out
Sorry to see you go (I didn't see the offending stuff so can make no comment (mind you being uncertain of the facts rarely stops me shooting my mouth off)). As you know well, I haven't agreed with everything you posted but at least I can banter with you unlike some of the humourless ratbags who lurk in this medium.
Question is: will you or I return first?
best wishes

Dear Bob
Please re-consider - don't leave us - we value your observations, especially when we disagree ... we always learn something & there is always the possibility that we will come to agree with you
I have the honour to remain Your obedient Servant and
All the best
Thank you all of those who have made such nice comments (rightwingery, as I am sure you know, I hang on every word of your comments, you are a visionary; sadly for you, the inner democrat in me means I will probably let the people decide as opposed to some blogging right-wing nutter with a laptop). I appreciate your views, but there's more to life than this as the 50 dead in a car bomb explosion in Iraq and the two poor souls found in a field near Ipswich prove. Let's move on... and as I said, it's a period of reflection, not life and death.
I agree with Mr Paine. Right or (mostly) wrong, Bob adds to the gaiety of nations and will be missed. Come back soon.
After the initial shock, you soon get used to people calling you a racist. You have to expect the Mail to be after you - just as the Mirror would be after a Tory councillor.
Could you install Gary Elsby as guest poster in your absence ? He makes you sound like Jill Knight.
"I make the claim here that Conservatives in 1930's-45 and beyond were indeed closet fascists and attempted to land Hitler and install Oswald Mosley as a puppet Fascist Dictator with the intent of bypassing Government wishes and Democracy."
Ah yes. That would be the ex-Labour Minister Oswald Mosley (interned without trial by a Tory government), ex the Labour party that voted to disarm as Hitler rearmed, that voted against the RAF expansion that saw the first Hurricane and Spitfire squadrons ... I could go on.
Chamberlin and Baldwin may have been sorely misguided but to suggest they were Mosley fans is plain daft. Gary is crackers.
I second, third, fourth, or whatever, Unity's comments. And word is bond on the CRE stuff in my email. Hope to see you back soon, and glad Unity will be continuing.
I'd post my score, but it is embarrassingly low - damn that john mellencamp, who I blame entirely.
rightwingery should at least have the gumption to respond to my comments, since he'she felt justified in taking a pop at me in an earlier post, before continuing with any ragging.
Sorry you can't make the bash - I'll go the extra mile and force down the 51st in your honour. By the way beat you by 2% scored 86 - bit disappointed really thought I could do better.
Laban, Gary put his head above the trench, together with scrybe, when a lot of others didn't want to get caught up in the storm, and he meant it. Give me one or two of those 'crackers' for every 'safe' blogger, any day.
Macca... you were always better on that Mellencamp-type tripe on the 'quizzers'. I thouight I might 'do' you on the earlier stuff. try Ernesto, although in the absence of a bit of Nat King or Val Donnegan (sic) I suspect he's in at about 40%.
Hi Bob,
as an occasional reader of your blog I have never yet plucked up the courage to make a comment or reply, so I hope that this will only be my first, and certainly not the last.
Let the episode go, it will soon be water under bridge and yesterday's news. This British blogosphere needs your character and human thoughts (regardless of your politics.) Don't be away too long now!
come on, just let the pratt piss off into obscurity. He was caught out displaying the pathetic political judgement one would expect from a hypocritical socialist.
As Iain Dale said, you are a fool and should be tossed (get it?) aside along with the other Labour politicians making such a f*ck up of this country
I couldn't recall who recorded Fortunate Son, and then remembered (Creedence Clearwater) just I hit the button to finish the test.
Liked the end question about lyrical travesties, even if the answer was easy - 'other', being god awful cover of the Pogue's mighty Fairytale of New York (the most honest crimbo song ever) by Ronan Keating which changes the line 'You cheap lousy faggot' to 'You're cheap and you're haggard'.
MacGowan and political correctness? Nah, it'll never work.

Near the knuckle maybe but a reason to withdraw never! Take a rest I know how demanding a web site can be...even my old pedestrian one....I never had your wit! The fact of the matter is that these things are powerful and they do shape peoples views.
Therefore getting some one to wind down an activity is a score for the opposition...see you after Xmas.....Season's Greetings!
OK, "rightwingery" is so obviously a troll that Bob's in the right by default. Still not sure about Unity's trick (and I normally like his stuff), but it's still unfolding, so I'll leave it.
It is, however, an understandable decision from you Bob, every needs a break from blogging every so often (and my no posts for a month site is testament to that), and I hope you come back in the new year suitably refreshed and ready for a good argument with some decent debaters.
Oh yeah, the question. 66% Considering Woodstock was 5 years before I was born (I guessed) and I'd never heard of some of those bands (clearly made their mark) that's not bad I think.
Also, on the last question, I had to tick 'other'. It's clearly the Scissor Sisters abominating Comfortably Numb...
Have I been labelled a 'cracker' there? Isnt that.....wait, no, it is! Right, I'm gonna kick up such a fuss now, Bob! tsk, tsk......
lol, j/p - you know my thoughts.
@ right wingery,
please, do your fellow posters and Bob the courtesy of at least responding intelligently to posts directed towards you before continuing with your inflammatory and off point remarks. It is the least you could do. Alternatively, please provide strong proof that BP is a "hypocritical socialist" as you claim in your last post. Because your current diatribe is both childish and inaccurate.

All the best. Don't let the b******s grind you down!
John... it is au revoir, but listen, this site is neither obligatory nor addictive. There's two million others out there for you to play with... go do it, spread your wings... broaden your horizons.
Please, please don't confuse me with someone who cares what you think.
Bob, stay where you are, walking away now will give a victory to the blog prats who wander round the blogging world looking for something to moan about. Don't let them win, you've got more support than you can imagine!

Blimey, I am shocked. Bob, it's your choice but I'd hate to see you disappear. Yours is the first political blog I read each day as I like to start it off with a dose of good sense, honesty and integrity, three things that are in short supply in UK politics in the 21st century. Your words have kept me from becoming a complete cynic. Anyway, have a good break, enjoy the Giftmas hols and hopefully we'll see you back in the new year, in full-on, grumpy old councillor mode, of course. We wouldn't want it any other way.
John... that's incredible (if not slightly worrying). Yoy, what would keep the world spinning if it were not for pedants. Sadly for your piss poor attempt at political point scoring, Labour were not in Government for a single year of my schooling, so the words 'shoot' 'own' and 'foot' come to mind.... but just for you, I'll change it.
What makes me really sick about this whole affair is Iain and Guido taking strategic steps along the high road while their common pack of hangers-on go for the throat... and given how many of them are anonymous cowards or owners of weblogs maybe a month or so old, you would be forgiven for thinking that what Bob is up against is a couple of wannabe Tory teenagers in their bedroom.
Hi Bob
Dont be away too long.
A Week is a long time in blogging!
stay in touch
Regards
Tony

I wouldn't wish to divert from Bob's temporary holiday in any respect, but I can always spot an historical revisionist anywhere and challenge the perception that Traitors were all around within the Labour Party at the outbreak of war.
It is true that Moseley was a labour MP and was frustrated in his desire to lead. He was also a tory (therefore a traitor in the making) and was similarly frustrated.
He took cash from Mussolini and Hitler as well as their Lordships and the Mail openly supported the idea of a coup to stop the 'commies'.(lets ignore the gas chambers here, after all, they did),
The Tories were(and are) traitors.
The deputy PM was a Moseley supporter and wanted the coup. In fact they were preparing for it with military tactics with armed support from within the Army and other services. All Tory led.
It goes even higher throughout the blue bloods and their mistresses(WS).
Cut your games out Laban, this was a Treacherous Tory plot to install fascism into the UK with the intention of removing MPs and replacing them with a five strong(?!) committee. All Tories.
Once interned, they squealed and ratted on each other but the mystery still prevails as to who was Mr. big.
The initial targets were Stoke, Birmingham and most of London.
Today they support the BNP and UKIP and guess where these scumbags are hiding today?
Yes, you've guessed it, the 'New' Tory party( I prefer to refer to it today as the Al Jolson party.( just because I have a small mind and it makes me laugh).

Reflect Bob (or just rest) but come back. there's a reason why you are highly rated - think of that, not of the opprobrium heaped on you by right wingers who would rather you were not blogging. You made a mistake, apologised and were open about it. But don't pack it in completely.

Bob's not gone anywhere... it looks like this thread is the new BP blog.
I disagree with almost everything you say, and it's so funny seeing a lefty hoisted on the petard of their own political correctness.
Ernesto refuses to do the quiz - claims its bourgeois indulgence and distracts us from the serious cause of revolution (that's Walsall speak for I'd just make a an arse of myself if I tried)
Gary h. - I've got a bike... and a lot of people have been telling me to get on it lately, but I don't think they mean for the exercise!
Sandwellian??? You disagree with me? You class traitor. I've never been that strong on the PC front. You didn't see PragueTory and the other Tory muppets jumping up and down screaming sexist when I put a picture of Blair dressed as a woman a couple of weeks ago. I wonder why....?
To be honest Bobby , I think you were hard done by. If have seen others post far worse images that incited hatred against the Jews. I think Prague Tory was a little too zealous in his campaign. I do not believe that images of minstrels are inherently racist, it is how they are used that determines whether they are racist or not. I haven't seen the image you posted, but I can imagine that it was pathetic, even offensive but not racist as you were not setting out to cause race hatred.
In order to redress the balance, but still take a party-political pop at you. I hope you can see the funny side of this.
Matt... calm down, calm down. Michael ACTUALLY posted one of his usual pieces of jibberish. I just changed it a bit... well, quite a big bit really, but he is a pain in the arse.
C4.. PragueTory was not 'zealous'. He contacted other tory bloggers to whip up the storm because he hadn't got the wit or wisdom himself. I can prove that, I've got evidence from two Tory bloggers who refused to play his game. Also, he ran off at the mouth to the media... and again I've had confirmation from them.
If we cannot confine our discussions, no matter how vitriolic, to a debate between ourselves that bloggers and others read, you will have no open, transparent debate on blogs, by politicians or others, because they will wonder whether the Mail, the Express or Sky News will jump up and down. That's why I'm not blogging. I don't think it is possible in that atmosphere... unless you want to hide behind a PragueTory front. Is that what we expect from politicians? If so it rather contradicts the principle of accountability.

IMO quitting hands your opponents a victory they don't deserve... and all for a silly picture.
In the meantime feel free to drop by and leave the odd comment.
Kris, absolutely not. In fact I half expected that would happen. I thought that whilst the Party wouldn't bother about whether I criticised them, they would jump up on me if Tories or Liberals did. As far as I can tell I think they have accepted entirely that here was no intention to cause offence, that despite what gibberish PragueTory spews I am not a closet member of the BNP, and that I apologised if people did find it (racially) offensive. If I tell you I have not had one word from a single Party member or official even asking me to stop blogging, never mind take the site down.

Norman, eh? I think I might already have had a night out with her. Take a knotted wet towel.
Keep your eye on Mad Mac and his blog else he'll be getting himself in trouble (he said, as if that never happened to him). Look out for our Tory mate at the match on Sat... he's meeting up at the Barton's Arms if you want to buy him a pie and a pint and let bygones be bygones.

Bob I was hoping to meet you one day as I have heard a lot about you. Even after what you have done, people rush to your defence. You must be a great guy! However, seeing your behaviour over the last few days and the fact that you appear to be "childish" in your insults, I hope that I don't meet you.
Bob I'm disappointed. Not that you will care because you have enough friends and as long as you have your say you don't care who you offend.
Bob, I implore, tone it down. Let the furore die down. You are a councillor. If you want to have a go at someone, try not to slip into derogatory comments.
This isn't my council website. There is a link to that from here, and it is an entirely different beast. On this site we have a comments section. People are often rude and childish in their comments to me, and by and large, that's what they get back. It isn't a parliamentary debate or the Oxford Union, it's more like Hyde Park Corner on a Sunday morning. We have banter, we are self-opinionated, and we fall out. Alternatively there are all sorts of other blogs. Some are very intelligent, don't have comments... and they are extremely good. May I recommend http://normblog.typepad.com as a splendid example.
I might have been better able to respond if you had given me some examples, but actually, overall, I think you are wrong. I do care who I offend, and more often than not it is intended.
Finally, yes, I am a councillor, but like other councillors, we are Brian of Nazareth... we are not the bleedin' messiah. That's a different lot altogether.
To all the loony lefty brigade. you have all created this mess between you. so you should all take a few mins to realise it. Bob your no more a racist than I am a muslim. But you are a left wing liberal.
Far too many to choose from, comrade... and anyway, it's a matter of taste.. or bad taste, perhaps. Try the ones in the sidebar until you find one that fits you. I think you're right, the quiz is skewed towards middle ages to elderly 'blokes', and if you give me a quiz about any 'pop' music over the last decade I would struggle to get into double figures.
Margaret, I didn't say it was not for women. Why is it that you Tories (OK, I know they are your 3rd political group since your election, but sup with the devil and you better use a long spoon) constantly seek to misinterpret people? Is it because you have no policies to talk about?
I think if you look carefully you will see the last blog entry was 12th December. The 21st (i.e. today) is the date that the last comment was received. It would be churlish to ignore the many kind people who have sent their best wishes.
Tony: Congratulations!
